Sātvik is a Sanskrit word which means and signifies anything that is pure, positive and beneficial. The Indian agricultural tradition goes back many thousands of years and is based on sātvik principles of sustainability and purity. India possesses a rich corpus of ancient literature on agriculture with texts such as Vrkśāyurveda (literally meaning plant or tree āyurveda).
Traditional Indian farming promotes environmental conservation, biodiversity, organic farming, traditional seeds, animal welfare, farming communities, sensible energy use, soil and water conservation.
Community Seed Banks
Modern methods of industrial farming and the foray of multinational companies into India have threatened our traditional seed stocks. Though indigenous varieties are still preserved by a few farmers, they are getting depleted at an alarming rate. Self reliance on food and adaptability to climate change is critical for an agricultural country like India, which makes this is a major threat to our national sovereignty.
